I've found another game to waste my time. =D

I've been a pretty diehard fan of Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior ever since I first picked up Dragon Warrior Monsters for the GBA (which is like a Pokemon game, but in the Dragon Warrior universe and like 100 times better). Since then, I proceeded to purchase Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, Dragon Warrior 1, Dragon Warrior 2, and Dragon Warrior 3. All are great games (except DWM 2 >.>). I made sure to purchase all of the games for the gameboy (which is what those are). This was years ago, however, and I never did get Dragon Warrior VII for the Playstation.

But now, many years later, I picked up Dragon Quest VIII for $20 (what a steal!) and I love it. Much like Dragon Warrior 3 for the GBA, this game encompasses the day/night feature which not only affects the monsters you encounter, but your access to buildings, what people say, and what events go on. The voice acting is superb, the graphics are top notch (complimented heavily by Akira Toriyama's legendary style and flare), the gameplay is great, and the level of interaction in the world is immense. Not only is your character the cliche cleptomaniac as the main character is in every RPG game, but now you can also smash pots and barrels owned by the people you steal from! The fighting system is nothing we haven't seen before, but it is very well done nonetheless. The characters can wield about 3 different weapons each and their proficiency with each weapon is raised through attribute stats which you gain from levelling up. The only negative aspect about this game that I could find was the shortage of gold early on in the game and the steep difficulty levels. You definitely will want to level up and earn some gold near the town before venturing off on your quest because, even at level 5 (which takes, literally, about an hour to reach), the enemies can give you trouble if you're not properly equipped. This is hardly a negative, though. It merely makes the game more challenging.

I haven't even bothered with the Final Fantasy XII demo yet since this game is so awesome. I've spent about 3 hours now just levelling up, wandering around town (which is nowhere near being considered big), and completing one quest (retrieving a crystal ball from a cave).

What are your thoughts on the game or the series?

I played it at a friend's house. Everyone says that it's so charming, has a great atmosphere, whatnot etc. etc. but to me it just seemed like a huge grindfest with a cliche story made for people with old-school RPG nostalgia.

Maybe it's one of those games you need to play for a while to really enjoy it (like a lot of RPG's tend to be like).

Possibly, but keep in mind that Dragon Quest is not like Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy is always trying to make their stories as innovative and captivating as possible. Dragon Quest, on the other hand, has always had that same story about someone evil attacking a castle and a brave hero trying to stop him. Cliche? Yes. But like they say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Besides, a story is a small (albeit, major) part of an RPG, so when you consider how this game excels in everything (from interaction, level system, weapons, abilities, voice acting, etc), this game is damn near perfect. The bosses are hardly pushovers, so if you don't spend time leveling up and earning gold, they'll give you a run for your money (no pun intended).

Of course, I love DW/DQ, so my opinion is probably a bit biased. =/

I was like why is this topic so far up the list, and then I see a "bump topic" button so I'm posting to relieve my confusion.

Unless it wasn't you, then I'm scared. Give me some confirmation here.

Edit: oh yeah...so...uh...did you beat it?

I bumped it because it deserves to be bumped.

Nope, haven't beaten it yet. Like 70 hours logged and I'm nowhere near the end. Like I said, it's a long game (and I put it down for awhile because I got stuck (and then found out what to do in a matter of minutes of picking it up again)). I'm completely pwning it, though. I have some of the most powerful weapons in the game and I absolutely destroy the opposition. Right now, I'm just levelling up, getting better items, and finishing side quests to get stronger for a boss I need to fight (who dwarfs my strength).
