So, what programs for design, have you used/tried in the past?
Which have you stuck with and continue to use?
Also, maybe.. which did you try, liked, but no longer use 'cos either it was too difficult, or you just couldn't be bothered learning more of that program?

I used GIMP and Paint, when I was a n00b to gfx..

Now, I use Adobe PSCS2, Apo and Terragen.

I can't figure out how to design with Cinema 4D on my father's laptop, though.. Still experimenting around! ;)

With any design program, you just gotta keep practicing untill you get a basic understanding, and then experiment and go from there.

I have used:

PSP 7, 8, 9, X, XI, X2 (currently use X2)
Animation Shop 3
Photoshop 7, Cs, CS2, CS3 (Inc. CS2 + CS3 Portable)
GIMP
Paint (obviously)
Cinema 4d R8, R9, R10 (currently use R10)
Illustrator (that imo was hard - didn't try any tuts for it though, and gave up lol)

Can't remember what else.. hmm

Used PSCS2. But now I upgraded to CS3. I tried GIMP but it was too complicated for me and I didn't have the patience to study it :P

Used PSP during v7, I believe. (Windows)
Photshop 6-CS3 along with about half an hour of CS4 (6-CS3 on Windows, CS3 and CS4 on OS X)
Terragen .6 - Terragen 2 Tech Preview (Windows, Tech Preview briefly on OS X)
Various Cinema4D, Blender, 3DStudioMax, Maya, and Lightwave versions (Windows)
Dreamweaver MX-CS3 with the same half hour preview of CS4 (MX on Windows, rest on OS X)
Flash MX-CS3 (same as Dreamweaver)
Fireworks MX-CS3 (again)
ImageReady 7-CS2 (Windows)
Illustrator CS3 (OS X)
Pixelmator ? (OS X)

I also have limited experience in earlier versions of GIMP and a few others you've likely never heard of because they don't exist anymore. Also have experience in Photoshop Elements.

To whomever put down Photoshop Portable, it's not a supported app and is just a user created program that puts Photoshop on a flash drive, thus not being a version of Photoshop. ;)

Let's see, I wonder how many I actually have worked with:

Adobe Photoshop Elements v2
Adobe Photoshop v7,CS2
Adobe Premiere
Adobe Imageready v7,CS2
The GIMP
Corel Painter
Inkscape
Adobe Illustrator
Macromedia Flash
Blender 3D
Maya
3ds Max
SketchUp 6
Terragen

Opinions:
Photoshop was good, never used CS3, heard its not worth it so why bother. (includes Imageready)
The GIMP has a strong learning curve, mainly using it because I can't run PS on Ubuntu.
Flash is just not that useful a program.
Blender is really hard to use, probably would do better if I had a live teacher.
SketchUp is good for simple stuff, but it's really not that advanced.
Terragen, I could never really get the hang of, but it looked good.

The others I only worked with a little bit, so there's not much to say.

If for the new interface and speed bumps alone CS3 is worth it.
Flash is very useful if you aren't using it for dumb animations.
Terragen is a beautiful program once you learn how to use it. Bpauba, Ladyofspira, and Alyn prove that day in and day out.

I'm sure there are specific applications where flash is good. Flash games are nice and video players, and I have seen some very nicely done portfolios in Flash. But I've found it to be misused so much that it's got its own negative stigma going on.

Some of the portfolios I've seen using it alone make it useful to me. :P
