I don't think Linux will ever be able to eclipse the popularity of Windows unfortunately - neither is it as simple to use as Windows (or as much of an eye-candy - yea there's flavors and all but u need some basic knowledge of stuff kinda like DOS), nor is it as user-centric as MAC OS X.
