Some updates need to be installed prior to the Service Packs. Personally, I just go through all at once and install them all whenever they're available.  Same with Linux... just install as many as possible, restart, check again 'cause sometimes there are more... now repeat until there are no more updates... then install MS Office and watch more updates appear.... Why MS Office when you can install OpenOffice?

Why MS Office when you can install OpenOffice? Quicker than downloading. And chances are, he'd be more familiar with MS Office than OpenOffice.
