First of all, what program did you make them in?

If it's PS, try adding layer effects to make the text stand out. Once you get used to them, try brushing with various tools (burn, dodge etc).

At the moment, they're flat, and nothing that strikes different from anything made in paint.

Yeah, I'm still toying around with them, I was thinking about having a melting type theme, I thought it would look really nice.
