Pros:
--good battery life
--great games out now (you'd be hard pressed to find good stuff at launch)
--superb third party support (surprise for a Nintendo system)
--quality first-party games as well
--bright screen(s) (if you get the Lite)
--fairly large variety of games across genres
--backwards compatible with GBA games
--free Wi-Fi multiplayer
--region free; great for imports
--casual games as well as "hardcore" ones, depending on who in your family's playing
--touch screen

Cons:
--white Lite may become yellow with use (all white products usually do, and no you don't pee on 'em, it's usually the skin's natural oil)
--black Lite gets smudged easily; easy to wipe off, but you have to do it often
--some of the great games don't use touch screen controls that heavily
--graphical capabilities fall short of the PSP
--not that many all-out 3-D games
--friend code system for Wi-Fi (exception: Metroid Prime Hunters)
--GBA carts stick out slightly out of the Lite's GBA cart port
--does one thing and does it good: gaming; if you want a multimedia player you should get a PSP--there are multimedia features (browser, MP3 player, headset, rumble pak, etc.) but most are either mediocre in quality or you have to get them separately...or both




Those are the goods and bads like you said, don't know what to put for everything else. If you want a handheld solely for the games, you should definitely get a DS. If not, you should consider your options.
