www.giveawayoftheday.com/A very interesting site, indeed. Every day, a new program is offered for free. The program can be anything from a screensaver to dvd burning software, but one thing remains the same: the usual price tag is stripped, and it's offered 100% free. Although the programs aren't always useful, they do come in handy. For instance, if you need software to convert videos into Zune format, you'd usually have to go out and buy it (or suffer a huge watermark with lower quality). That, or you can wait for GAotD to distribute that stuff for free. For instance, today's software is a video converter that does just that. Not too sure of the quality, but free is free. Naturally, there are some conditions to this. In order to get the software for free, you MUST install the program within the allotted time. If the download is for today, you must install it today. It will not let you install it tomorrow. You also get no free technical support or updates. But hey, that's to be expected. Again, free is free.

See, I use Ubuntu.
So everything is free. Because all your base are belong to Linus Torvalds.
"For example, the GPLv2 in no way limits your use of the software. If you're a mad scientist, you can use GPLv2'd software for your evil plans to take over the world ("Sharks with lasers on their heads!!"), and the GPLv2 just says that you have to give source code back. And that's OK by me. I like sharks with lasers. I just want the mad scientists of the world to pay me back in kind. I made source code available to them, they have to make their changes to it available to me. After that, they can fry me with their shark-mounted lasers all they want. " ~Linus Torvalds

So it's not spyware or anything? That's a pretty good deal.

Ads? Of course, they'll make money. But software developers benefit a lot from this, as well. If you make software and want to sell it, it's very hard to make it known that the software exists. You'd have to pay for lots of advertising, get your name out there, promote it as much as possible, etc. It's a huge hassle that costs a lot of money.
That's where GAotD comes in to play. A software developer will just give the software to them and let them distribute it for free for that entire day. This costs the developer nothing. And, in exchange for the lost profit from the people who downloaded it for free, the developer now has a line of customers. Although they didn't buy it, they can use the software as if they did. This means that there are people who can say "Oh, I used that and liked it. I'd recommend it.", or something along those lines. That, in addition to the painful promotion I mentioned earlier will make the product much more known and help it spread much faster.
So yeah, it really can benefit the developers of the software, which is why they keep giving them software to distribute.
Oh, and to answer you question, SO, the software is all spyware free and stuff. McAfee's SiteAdvisor tests found some potential viruses in the freeware section, though. I'd stay away from there...

Wow, thanks Scorp. I've been looking for a good Video Converter, and that was the software today, but I'm too lazy to download it at quarter to midnight.

I missed out. Looking at their recent giveaways though, I should get a video converter in the future, because they sure have given a lot away.
