My PS2 broke. Again. Yes, again. This was my third PS2 and after this it'll be my fourth. What I don't get is that the slimlines are supposed to be worlds better at working longer than the brick-model PS2's that got DRE's if you looked at 'em funny. I already asked for help to see if I was at fault at all at the GameFAQs PS2 board, but I only got two replies so far, one saying that I did indeed have bad luck and the other telling me to get a PS3. Hm. 'Least they tried to help, though.

I'll copy and paste what I wrote there so maybe someone'll spot something they can tell me:

So backstory first. I got my first PS2 (a slimline) probably around in '05. It stopped reading discs after two days. Yeah, two days. So I figure it's a fluke and go exchange it since it's well under warranty.

My second slimline works fine for about a year, then stops reading discs again. It goes straight to the browser and if you select the disc icon it says that the disc cannot be read. Luckily, I had a two-year warranty from Best Buy and went to exchange it again (it was under manufacturer's warranty too, but I didn't want to ship it and wait who knows how long to get it back).

That one worked great too, but a little over a year (I'm guessing) passed and just a couple weeks ago it broke again. This time it stopped reading discs too, but it's also making a weird clicking sound when it does it. I'm gonna have to go exchange it again and buy another Best Buy 2-year warranty, but before I do...I wanna know, do I just have bad luck or am I doing something wrong?

By my description you'd think I throw my PS2 around the four corners of the room every week, but no, it barely moves from its position. It's located on the bottom shelf of this wooden cabinet thing that has two shelves, the top one where my GCN is and the bottom where the PS2 is, so it's not on carpet or anything.

As for ventilation, I think the fan's in the back and there's probably close to a foot of room back there, so is that good enough? The sides have a few inches between anything solid.

Dust is my next guess. I just dusted the PS2 itself and the area around it. It was a little dusty, but it wasn't exactly caked in dust either.

I don't want to violate the warranty so I don't want to try any repair procedures, but I just want to know before I go get another one, is there any maintenance I should be doing/have I done anything wrong? I just want to play mah games =O

So advice would be appreciated.

Am I at fault somewhere, anywhere? Or does Sony hate me? I'm hearing rumors of a slimmer slimline (if that was possible) for $99 coming out sometime in '08, but I'm not really sure if 1) it's true and 2) if I want to wait that long. I just don't want to have to keep trading in a new one every year...eventually old-gen systems'll be hard to find. So I need to know if I can keep my console living arrangements in any better shape.

Help?

wow going a four now... dam

Well first what woould be your game play for the week? how many hrs do you get per day and about the avg for the week do you know? Also do you tend to leave the ps2 running and go away for a while then come back and start playing again? (what a mean for a while like 2hrs+)

I think the slimline sucks, they may load things faster and what not but i see people getting news ones year after year. thats nuts, I had my ps2 since half year to year after it first came out and now something broke on it but still works like a charm.

If you really want to save the money and wait then go for it. but if money is not the problem and want to start playing right off then i would just go out and get another when ever you get the chance.

Second i might suggest maybe changeing were the ps2 os located. maybe move it a little bit and see how that works ( just a thought) i had my ps2 change its location so many times its not funny. Look at this way you dust yours. i dont remember the last time i did that >_<

Last i think Sony Hates you. They know when you are comeing so the stores change their products so you can get the crappy one. :D I know what you are going though i had the same problem with out products.

Send the KEA after 'em. Maybe you'll even get the fancy silver one. :P

But yeah, only think I could think of is ventilation. Maybe put something small, but durable, under the four corners of it for better ventilation? You never know if it also has a fan on the bottom too.

I would also suggest to keep it in the open for better ventilation. keeping it a cabinet tend to keep the slimlines more warm then the thicker ones.

Well I doubt there would be a fan on the bottom since systems everywhere would probably overheat. I've been meaning to take a picture of my setup so you guys can see what I'm talking about. I haven't had time to return it yet for another one...hopefully this weekend, though. First I need to find the warranty receipt.
