Josh, I think it'd just be easier to make a legitimate transparent screen instead of...whatever the hell you're suggesting. :P

Honestly... it wouldn't be too difficult. They already have Kinect code out there that moves a game camera with the movements of your head, you'd just have to alter that code to control a rear mounted, motorized camera. They also have a whole slew of apps that allow you to put video on your desktop. :P

For one person, perhaps. But for multiple people and somehow displaying multiple angles at the same time? Would it really be that hard to make a monitor out of transparent plexiglass (or something similar) with some sort of projected display on it? Seems far more effective and logical to me. And probably an asston cheaper.

Yeah, but then you have to deal with worse quality picture (a great design issue) and the fact the projector itself would be visible inside the screen. :P

Nah, I'm sure they could find a way to miniaturize the projector so it's hardly visible and I wouldn't be surprised if they already have HD projection capabilities. And if they don't, I don't think it'd be that much of a stretch. But maybe. Either way, I think it's FAR less complicated than a multi-camera sensory system.

Pico projectors are small enough, but it needs to be a few feet away from the surface to provide a big enough viewing area.

That said, I don't think it would be possible still. Just do it the way I described and it would work just fine. Hell, it'd be pretty damn easy, too, if you had knowledge of the right languages.

I was thinking of some sort of internal projection. I'm not exactly sure how it'd work with such extreme angles, but I trust scientists.

That'd be a clever fix, though highly impractical I would think. :P Especially when the number of people viewing and angles increase.

And the fact that you would need 1 camera per person viewing it. lol

But seriously, it's doable for a single person. Not even hard to do, in theory. Let's just leave it at that, damnit. :P

Yeah, but I'm talking practicality, which requires multiple. :P

How is a transparent monitor (not a hologram like in Minority Report, mind you) practical in the first place? :P

But that's not transparent. It's only the illusion of transparency, and the fact that it doesn't work for more than one person really kind of defeats the purpose. No one's saying it wouldn't work like you say it would, but that's not even close to being a transparent monitor.

A transparent monitor wouldn't be possible, though. the only way would be to project onto a transparent surface such as glass. Problem there is that unless the projector is using physical shades to block off what areas would need to be transparent, light will always project onto the glass, regardless of whether the area is full of delightful porn or being used as nothing more than a window to see your children play behind your computer. And even that... can you project onto glass like that and have it be a readable image? My first impression is that too much of the light would go through the glass or be too refracted to be usable.

With typical projectors, sure, but I can't imagine it'd be too hard to compensate for that.
